My name is Joan Jonckheere (Mama Bear), founder of Memory Bears LLC.
My passion for children and helping them keep the memories of loved ones, combined with my love of sewing and creativity led to the creation of my first Memory Bear representing many stories.
It all started some months ago after the passing of the husband of a close friend. I wanted to do something very special for her, her children, and her grandchildren. I asked for some of his clothing, a favorite shirt, sweater or a blanket. These would serve, I explained, as the material to make the Memory Bear. Once made the Memory Bear would serve as a lasting memory of him.
As a former pediatric nurse, I have seen how both children and adults cherish a tangible memory and the comfort it gives them so I created the huggable, comforting Memory Bears. I have seen the people I have made them for love, hold, hug and even talk to the Memory Bears as if they were alive.
My love of sewing and seeing the comfort that the Memory bears gave; planted the seed to start my business.
I recently made some Memory Bears from some “well loved" quilts my grandmother made for members of my family. Quilts that couldn’t be used as a blanket were repurposed into something that could be cherished, held, and hugged; were handed down to family members as a part of history.
A Memory Bear (your Bear) can be made for the remembrance of a loved one or a special event such as a christening, wedding. If a loved one is away in the service, a mission or just travels a great deal a memory bear can also be a great comfort for those left at home to hug and talk to. Repurpose a cherished fabric or article of clothing.
A half hour consult is required to really capture the story behind the bear. These bears can represent many people or many stories. When you look at the bear I want you to remember the many stories and memories of this person. It can be called a "STORY BEAR"
For every memory bear purchased I will also donate $5.00 to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
I have also started using ties to make small purses. Take a look at the pictures. Just 3 of your ties will make a memory purse for $23.00. I also have many already made up purses with my ties for $25.00. They have pockets inside to keep driver license, credit cards, pen, keys
